Gifting inspiration: Crates is High picks three future classics

Simon, owner of the Crates Is High Record Shop in Northgate St, Launceston, has hand picked three contemporary releases that he feels will become classics in their genre. They are available in store.

Artist: Floating Points & Pharoah Sanders

Title: Promises

Label: Luka Bop

Genre: Jazz

A beautiful and organic record which was sadly Pharoah’s final album before he passed away, but one in which he and producer/writer Sam Shepherd create an incredibly moving and sensitive set, culminating in a stunning moment where the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra weave a magical string arrangement that transcends almost all contemporary releases of the past few years. Voted Time Magazine’s album of the year 2021.

Artist: Common & Pete Rock

Title: The Auditorium

Label: Loma Vista

Genre: Hip-Hop

Absolutely killer new album from one of the most influential producers and intelligent rappers of the past 30 years. With a distinctly 90s feel but with a firm sense of contemporary sophistication, this pairing hit all the right notes and make a strong case for album of the year!

Artist: Kista

Title: Songs From The Seas Edge

Label: Sound Weight

Genre: Electronica/Hip-Hop

An underrated down-tempo masterpiece from UK producer Kista, whose sonic soundscapes are reminiscent of classic trip-hop albums by DJ Shadow or DJ Krush but carry his own distinctive sound and approach. Tracks range from delicate cinematic sketches to heavy hip-hop head nodders. File this under future UK classic.
