Memorial ride to honour the life of an exceptional young man
Cornish bikers are gearing up to take part in a memorial ride to remember local boy Jozef Stasiak this December, while raising money for two organisations: Jozef ’s Dream CIC and Children’s Hospice South West’s Little Harbour.
Jozef’s Dream CIC was established to support families and children living with complex needs, while aiming to supply sensory equipment in schools. Jozef’s mum, Heidi, wanted to start a movement that would seek to include and value all children in communities, and ensure all medically complex children can live a fulfilled life without stigma or judgement.
She said: “We believe that every individual has a valuable purpose in life. With help from other individuals or within a support group, we hope to support caregivers to feel and believe that whatever their wish for their child’s future life may be, they are listened to, believed and can find strength to overcome any negativity or barriers, thus helping the caregiver to gain confidence in moving forward and helping their child reach their full potential.”
Jozef was born on 6th November 2010 with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Sadly his twin brother Jacob passed away at just three-and-a-half months old.
Heidi continued: “I wanted Jozef to attend mainstream education, as he was very social and loved being around people. I wanted to break the stigma about complex children; I think he did, too. His bravery taught me all I needed to learn; he showed me he wanted to be accepted for who he was.”
One thing Jozef loved was the sound of a motorbike engine. When he passed away in December 2022, it seemed only right that motorbikes should accompany him on his final journey. Motorcyclists from across the county and beyond joined the mission to give Jozef a special send-off.
On Saturday, 7th December, a memorial ride to support Jozef’s Dream and Little Harbour will start at midday from Carnon Downs campsite, making its way to Ships and Castles car park in Falmouth where there will be refreshments as well as a toy sale and a Christmas craft market.
Heidi added: “Jozef showed me how determined he was right from the start, proving doctors wrong at every chance he got. Even though he struggled at times, he always kept a smile on his face; he was a light in my heart.”
Jozef's Dream holds a support group for medically complex children and their families on the second Tuesday of the month, 12pm-12.30pm, at The Hub in Carnon Downs.
