Getting into the festive spirit in Launceston

We can’t believe we’re here again, getting ready to decorate our homes with twinkling lights and obscene amounts of tinsel, but Christmas is approaching, and there is plenty to do in and around Launceston this festive season.

St Mary Magdalene’s Christmas Tree Festival

St Mary’s Christmas tree festival will run until Friday, 13th December this year. Pop in and walk around the church to see all the beautiful decorated trees by local businesses and organisations. Mince pies and refreshments will be available.

‘A Dash of Magic’ at Homeleigh Garden Centre

Nobody does Christmas like a garden centre. Take the kids to this fully immersive, family fun experience at Homeleigh. Join Dash in Santa’s magic-powered sleigh in full HD Virtual Reality, every Saturday and Sunday leading up to Christmas. 

Johnny Cowling Christmas Concert for Cancer Research UK

Join Launceston & District Friends of Cancer Research UK for a Christmas concert with Johnny Cowling at Launceston Town Hall on Thursday, 5th December, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets include a pasty supper, plus there will be refreshments and a raffle on the night. For tickets, contact Maureen on 07782413207 or call into David Parish Menswear. 

Festive workshops with Make Stuff Happen CIC

Join Make Stuff Happen CIC for their festive craft workshops, taking place throughout December. This week, there will be keyring making and a Christmas wreath workshop on Friday 6th December. Other workshops include Christmas earrings on 10th December, assorted paper decorations on 12th December, and lampshade making on 17th December. Charlie Bears’ Christmas Extravaganza

Join the cubs at the Charlie Bears Bearhouse (Pennygillam) on the weekend of 14th and 15th December for their Christmas Extravaganza. Explore the enchanting bear street in the Gallery, do some Christmas shopping in the gift shop, visit Father Christmas and his reindeer, and even have a go at ice skating (book in advance)! There will also be the chance to take part in the Christmas quiz, with Rumpus the bear up for grabs for one lucky winner! 

Christmas at Tre, Pol & Pen 

There are plenty of things to do this Christmas at Tre, Pol & Pen. Their festive-themed afternoon teas will be served throughout December, 2pm-3.30pm, Monday to Saturday. There will be a Christmas Cornish Makers Market on Saturday, 7th December, 10am-4pm, with free entry. Their popular Party Tea with Santa events are back this year on 14th and 21st December, 12pm-4pm - meet Santa and his reindeer, enjoy festive treats, and go home with a gift, advanced booking only. The restaurant will also be serving Christmas lunch between usual lunch hours, advanced booking only. Threads Christmas Shopping 

On Saturday 7th December, Threads is holding a Christmas Shopping Event, opening all day from 9am until 7pm. There will be a 15% discount for the day on all Christmas sewing and craft supplies, as well as gifts and homeware. There'll be mulled wine and nibbles for everyone to enjoy while they browse and plenty of Christmas music and jumpers!

Carol concert at St Torney’s Church 

Head to St Torney’s Church in North Hill for an evening of carol singing, at the church Christmas carol concert, on Thursday, 19th December. 

Jingle Jam

On Friday, 20th December, spend the day in town to hear the variety of music throughout the winding streets of Launceston. For beginners or ‘rusty players’, Jingle Jam is the perfect opportunity for musicians to connect with the community. There will be everything, from folk, rock and classical, to all the festive favourites - a great way to get you in the festive mood! 

Christmas trees at Dewcombe

Dewcombe is now open and welcoming people on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the run-up to Christmas to choose their very own Christmas tree. Whether it’s a cut tree or a potted tree you’re after, they will have something for you. 

Christmas knitting and gift shopping

Blacker Yarns’ new Mill Outlet is open for Christmas shopping for gifts, including knitting and crochet project kits, pure wool yarns made from British breeds, patterns for unisex garments, books, gift vouchers and some ready-made hats and mitts. 

They are open from Monday to Thursday, 11am to 2pm for personal festive shopping experiences, booking in advance required.

Free Saturday parking 

Every Saturday in December, it will be free to park in the Westgate Street multi-storey car park, offered by Launceston Town Council. Park up, head into town and get your Christmas shopping done! 

Free Community Christmas Day Lunch

If you are alone at Christmas or need a bit of support and a hot dinner, there will be a free community Christmas Day lunch at Launceston Central Methodist Church. The volunteer team will be serving a hot three-course meal and plenty of festive cheer, completely free of charge. For those unable to get to the church for the day, they can deliver your meal to you. People should arrive at 12.30pm for lunch at 1pm. To book your place, email Evie on lansonchristmas@gmail.com
