Getting into the festive spirit in Wadebridge

We can’t believe we’re here again, getting ready to decorate our homes with twinkling lights and obscene amounts of tinsel, but Christmas is approaching, and there is plenty to do in and around Wadebridge this festive season.

Winter in Wadebridge

Organised by the wonderful Chamber of Commerce team, a series of events taking place across the town in the run-up to Christmas are sure to get you in the festive spirit. This starts with the Christmas lights switch-on, on Friday 29th November.

Starting at 6.30pm, the happy melodies of Christmas carols will carry through the town as you head from shop to shop. InTune Choir will be at the bandstand from 6pm until 6.30pm; Wadebridge Male Voice Choir’s beautiful sound can be heard on Molesworth Street from 6.35pm until 7pm; and Wadebridge Town Band will follow at 7pm - all certain to get you singing - or at least humming - along! Shops will be open until 8pm, a perfect way for you to start your Christmas shopping and support local businesses.

With Father Christmas making an appearance, plus a local celebrity switching on the lights, this is an event not to be missed!

On 13th December, there will be another late night shopping night, with shops open until 8pm once again. There will be carols from Fusion Choir and More Harmony Choir outside the Molesworth Arms, while Connect Church Choir can be found at the Co-op bandstand. Connect Church will also be running a Christmas trail between 5.30pm and 8pm, starting and finishing at the church. Wadebridge Methodist Church will be open on both 29th November and 13th December, offering warm drinks, mince pies and children’s activities. There will also be a quiet fireworks display.

For the runners amongst us, there will be a festive fun run - plus fancy dress - on 14th December at 11am. This event is suitable for all ages, and there will be prizes for the best fancy dress, so get your thinking caps - or Santa hats - on! Participants should meet at the wooden park in Jubilee Park and will need to have filled out a registration form, available here: https://www.visitwadebridge.co.uk/christmas#fancy-dress-festive-fun-run-14th-dec

Take the little ones to the Santa’s Grottos planned this festive season, with the first taking place on the Christmas lights switch-on event, and two more on 13th and 14th December. Santa’s Grotto can be found at the old cafe in Wadebridge Co-op, £10 per child, with the chance to write a letter to Father Christmas, before visiting the man in red and going home with a gift. To book your child’s place, email cornwallbounce@gmail.com.

Wadebridge Choral Society’s Christmas concert

Get into the Christmas spirit with Wadebridge Choral Society at their Christmas performance at Egloshayle Church on 21st December, starting at 6pm.

The choir will be singing a festive mix of their favourite anthems and hymns, including some Cornish carols, and some for audience participation. Look out for the lovely Christmas link between Cornwall and Cambridge. Musical director Nicholas Danks is also Director of Music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

The famous King’s ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ was originated by the Bishop of Truro in 1880, then expropriated by the Dean of King’s College for their carol service. That Christmas Eve service is now broadcast around the world and frequently includes the Cornish carol, the Sans Day Carol. The choir will be performing the traditional carol, named after the Cornish village of St Day, on the 21st December, as well as a generous splash of festive creativity from both Nick and Accompanist, Steve Tyrrell.

To round off the evening, mulled wine and mince pies will be served, offering the tastes and smells of Christmas. Tickets are £12.50 (under 16’s £5), and will be available from the Wadebridge Bookshop from the beginning of December and on the door. For additional information, contact Anne Wenger on wengeranne@hotmail.com.
