Stones Bakery: The family-run business baking up a storm
After a turbulent but exciting few years, the Stones Bakery team is expanding, with bakeries in both Falmouth and Penryn offering a little slice of heaven to devoted sourdough lovers, pastry fanatics and coffee enthusiasts alike.
With the Falmouth bakery on High Street and Penryn bakery tucked away on the Praze, Stones Bakery is in demand. Run by husband and wife team Oliver and Rosie, and supported by a stellar team of bakers, coffee connoisseurs and front-of-house staff, an exciting future lies ahead for this independent local business.
“It’s been really positive,” Rosie told Falmouth Life. “Our original shop in Falmouth was very small, so we moved to our current space in Falmouth in 2017. Again, we ran out of room!
“When we saw this place (in Penryn), we thought it would be ideal for what we needed because it’s got outdoor space too! We’ve definitely got a lot of room here.”
And what a space it is, with a large, open indoor cafe area that allows customers to watch the bakers at work, creating a solid connection with the staple goods that Stones Bakery is known for. A long surface dividing the cafe and bakery area is loaded up with delicious cakes, pastries and giant cinnamon buns - the perfect accompaniment to a coffee - plus incredible sandwiches, made with Stones’ famous sourdough.
Outdoor seating on the deck gives customers the chance to meet friends for catch-ups in the sunshine, and with parking available directly outside, the Penryn bakery really is accessible to all.
Great local ingredients and coffee are at the heart of everything Stones Bakery offers, from their bestselling sourdough bread, to sweet treats.
From humble beginnings in 2007, when Oliver - a former miller - and Rosie decided to relocate to Cornwall from the Midlands, the business has grown exponentially. But Rosie, Oliver and the team have had to overcome hurdles in the last few years to make things work, and further support their community.
Rosie said: “Covid wasn’t a lot of fun for anybody, but we found it brought about a lot of opportunities. We started a home delivery service, so Oliver and I went in the car delivering bread to people who were isolating. It became really popular, with over 100 deliveries to make in one day. At that time, when it was the beginning of the pandemic, people were really scared. I think customers appreciated it, and felt quite reassured to know their local businesses were trying to be there for them.”
With home deliveries taking off, Rosie and Oliver realised it was something that was here to stay.
“We decided after Covid to continue the home deliveries, so we now have a van,” Rosie continued. “We supply lots of restaurants in Falmouth and Penryn, which is great because it’s known as an area that has a good food and drink scene.”
With the Penryn bakery having opened in May this year, plus the team’s commitment to supplying local restaurants and attending events in the area as much as possible, it is an exciting time for this local bakery. Rosie encourages the community to ‘keep an eye out’ for upcoming events and projects - including a brand new pizzeria, which will operate out of the Falmouth bakery in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday each week.
Rosie added:
“I love Falmouth, and what’s nice about it is you have the balance between holiday makers and locals. Now we’re in Penryn, which is a bit off the tourist trail, it means we can continue serving the community with quality baked goods.”
